  • How is surgery performed?

  • Endoscopic Microdiscectomy - A smaller incision is made to insert an endoscope so the surgeon can view the surgical area. Then, other tiny instruments are inserted to remove of the offending disc. Additional benefits include no general anesthesia, no dissection of muscles and tendons from bone, and a shorter healing time.

Discectomy, invasive procedure is usually performed only when the endoscopic microdiscectomy is unsuccessful or cannot be performed. Incision is made in the back, and then muscle and tendon are disconnected to reveal the offending disc. After removal of bone, tissue, and then the disc, muscles and tendon are reconnected. The incision is closed with sutures, staples, or metal clips, and a bandage is applied.

Spinal Fusion is also used to treat Herniated Disc.

Which procedure to be performed depends on patient’s condition and doctor’s decision.

  • What is the post-surgical care?

  • For endoscopic discectomy, you can return to work in a week or so. Most patients can return to moderate daily activities the day after endoscopic microdiscectomy, but most wait a week or 2 before returning to work.

Traditional discectomy requires bandage changes, more rest and recovery time, physical therapy, and assistance at home during recovery.
