  • How is surgery performed?

  • The traditional method, Arthrotomy required large incisions, several weeks on crutches, and several months of rehabilitation.

Arthroscopy involves inserting a tiny fiberoptic telescope into the joint through a small incision. Fluid is then inserted into the joint to widen it. Then, using miniature instruments which may be as small as 1/10 of an inch, the structures are examined and the surgery is performed.

With the method of arthroscopy, it is possible to repair a torn meniscus. As the slow healing process of the meniscus, the recovery time is longer then removing it.

Which procedure to be performed depends on patient’s condition and doctor’s decision.

  • What is the post-surgical care?

  • For arthrotomy, recovery includes several weeks on crutches, and up to several months of rehabilitation.

For Arthroscopy, your knee will be covered with compressive dressing to prevent bleeding and swelling. A brace and crutches may be needed. During this time, pumping the ankle up and down is recommended to improve blood flow in the leg. You can usually start walking a day or two after surgery and return normal activities after 2-3 weeks. With a proper rehabilitation program you can usually expect to be back in sports within 4-6 weeks.

For Meniscus repair, the torn meniscus is held together until it can heal firmly. During the healing process, weight bearing on the joint is not allowed for at least 3 weeks after surgery. After 4 weeks you can start walking using the hinged knee brace. You can walk freely and can also do light exercises in the second month. Returning to sports is permitted after 3-4 months.
